Our educational team collected questions among the most frequently asked concerns by parents with struggling first-graders, as well as given reliable answers.

How can I help my first grader who is struggling with reading?

Advocate for your child by pinpointing their struggles and discussing them with their teacher and pediatrician. Ask for an educational evaluation to determine the exact reason for the struggle. Keep reading loud for them and exercise a lot of patience. Acknowledge their strengths and small wins rather than dwell on their weakness alone. Seek necessary help sooner than later for them to begin experiencing success early.

How can I grow my first grader’s love for reading?

Read aloud for them daily. Track their progress and give them positive feedback. Use interactive books since they increase kids’ comprehension and improve their interest in reading. Visit the library with them and let them pick books they love. Integrate technology in their reading, such as audiobooks. Use incentives to reward every improvement.

How can I help my First Grader to Read Fluently?

Read for them regularly to provide a fluent reading model.  Introduce eco-reading, whereby you read a sentence and ask them to reread the same sentence.  Introduce plays when reading a story and ask them to ape characters.  Use flashcards and word games to help your child learn many sight words. Provide your child with many books to facilitate extensive reading.  Download some reading apps to increase their opportunities to practice reading

How can I determine if my First Grader has a Reading Difficulty?

Your child may not master sounds and letters despite practicing in school and at home.  They may not blend sounds and may become very frustrated when asked to try. They may also experience difficulty rhyming words.

How can I help my first grader with writing?

Read a lot for them to facilitate content and love for writing. Ask your child to help you make a simple list, such as a grocery list or to-do list. Also, encourage them to write letters to friends, relatives, etc. Be a good role model by writing regularly in their presence. Don’t be too keen on handwriting and spelling since they will learn that along the way.

How can I improve my child’s fine motor skills?

Fine motor skills play a significant role in improving your child’s handwriting. Improve their motor skills through playing with dough and putty with them to strengthen their hands and grips. Introduce painting to enhance their hand-eye coordination and strength in their hands. Introduce them to the game of squeezing water from sponges. Do gardening with them to improve their gross motor skills.

Why is my child’s handwriting so messy?

Your child’s messy handwriting does not mean they are careless or lazy. Children’s motor skills develop differently, with some developing faster than their counterparts. Poor motor skills can also be the cause of your child’s messy handwriting. The writing difficulty could also be caused by dysgraphia or developmental coordination disorder (DCD).

How can I help my first grader improve her poor handwriting?

Practice a lot but in a fun way. You can, for example, use colored paper and rainbow-colored pencils. Please help them hold a pencil correctly and sit in the correct posture to improve their motor skills. Remember, patience pays.

What Math topics should my child learn in the first grade?

First grade is a learning level where students bloom both in math and reading. You should expect your first grader to learn simple addition and subtraction, write and count within 120, add within 100, tell time, measure objects, and have an understanding of basic fractions.

My first grader is struggling with math. How can I help?

Begin by understanding first-grade math milestones and acknowledge that your child may take longer than others to grasp some concepts. Secondly, try to understand the root cause of their poor performance by working closely with the teacher. Third, practice a lot and make math fun. Have the right math attitude, and let your child know that anybody can excel in math.

How can I help my first grader overcome math anxiety?

Have the right attitude towards math. Introduce math games and use math in real-life circumstances. Practice a lot of math with them. You can also ask for external help from tutors. Encourage your child to keep trying despite making mistakes. Let them know that mistakes are part of life. Read more about math anxiety.

Why does my first grader hate math?

It is most likely that math is taught to them in a non-interesting manner. It can also be hard when a child has to do what the teacher did to earn a mark. Other kids find math to be too dull compared to the other subjects. They can also hate math if they don’t understand some of the math concepts. Importantly, your child could be having a learning disability that hinders their ability to learn math. Check our 1st-grade math program.

Can reading out loud improve speech?

Reading aloud really helps boost your diction as well as expression, which you will then move right into your talking voice and creating voice. Reading out loud enriches your visual memory and also your capacity to see pictures in your mind.

Why reading out loud is essential?

Reading out loud is among the most essential things parents, as well as instructors can do with children. Reading out loud builds lots of essential fundamental skills, introduces vocabulary, gives a version of well-versed, expressive analysis, and helps kids recognize what reading for enjoyment is everything about.
