BOLAS SPIDERS are found in the United States. Missouri has four species. Each one can be considered a mimic. Some look like snails, while others look like bird droppings. The ruse worked because I initially thought this was a snail when I first saw it. Although they are similar to orb weavers in their classification, they don't spin webs. Instead they release a smell similar to that released by certain moths to attract a new mate. The bolas releases a strand silk with a sticky glob on it that the moth will use to capture her prey. The South American Gauchos use the bolas to throw at the animals' legs, effectively tripling them. After mating, the female will make several egg sacs. They overwinter, and the spiderlings will emerge in the spring. The male offspring is something that is quite unusual. They hatch as adults! They can mate already, so there is no maturing necessary. The growth of the females is still necessary. These tiny, 1/2-inch females are found on the ends of leaves from bushes and other plants. They look for poop (or snails) everywhere, but a keen eye might reveal one of Missouri's most unusual spiders.
